Medical School Grants
Most universities receive medical school grants from the government and
they often have specific departments to process the grant proposals that are submitted to the university. There are
staffs assigned to handle the medical grant applications from students. Aside from the
medical schools, there are also other associations and groups that provide these grants to medical
students.
The American Council Medical Education Grants Program assists any medical student improve his
chances for a better career in the medical profession through grants.
There are usually several grants or funds available every year, which can support medical
research initiatives. A grant office is usually in-charge of providing assistance to applicants, making sure
that they adhere to the legal, federal and administrative policies related to each grant.
A medical student in the U.S. would have more chances to be eligible for medical school grants
if they are accredited with the American Medical School Association (AMSA).
The AMSA extends financial assistance to deserving medical students or teachers who have served
in missions, or have taught in the field of medicine. Yearly, the association awards two grants for the
amount of $200 each.
Any student or teacher interested to avail of these grants can check their AMSA local chapter
or visit the AMSA website to apply online. All applications should be endorsed and signed by the local AMSA
chapter president. A breakdown of anticipated costs, including food and transportation should be included
with each application.
Other sources of financial grants for medical schools are the American Psychiatric Association
and the American Indian Graduate Center. These are just two of the many associations that provide
scholarships for medical studies or financial support for minority students who are doing medical
training.
In order to assist qualified medical students further their education or to stimulate more
research in the medical community, there should be more scholarships and grants made available to medical
students and practitioners.
Medical schools should take the lead in providing or looking for sources of financial
assistance that can help deserving applicants pursue their medical careers and contribute to the growth of
the medical profession.
